Asha Jefferies Returns With Empowering Track 'Cruise Control'

Emma Ray

Asha Jefferies (she/her) makes a triumphant return with new single and video, 'Cruise Control.' Known for her introspective, melancholic pop songs, Asha Jefferies shines brighter than ever in this empowering release, coinciding with the announcement of her signing with Nettwerk.

Produced and mixed by Sam Cromack of Ball Park Music, 'Cruise Control' emerged from the cozy confines of Prawn Records in Brisbane's inner north. This song was born during a period of profound transformation, self-discovery, and exploration. Asha explains, "To be in cruise control is to ride steady and smoothly through the storms of rough climate, harsh roads, lame parties, and undesired romantic gestures. It's a phrase I have kept close, after a lesson learned on testing my boundaries and finding the confidence to trust my gut. It's a growing-up anthem, cultivating comfort in my own skin and exercising what feels right and what doesn't."

The accompanying video was directed by Cody Wood, capturing Asha riding into a new phase of her journey with her sister alongside. She shares, “The clip was inspired by one of my favourite films, 500 Days of Summer and its expectation vs reality split screen scene. Both Cody and I love how split screens can tell a story of different versions of the self. We filmed over two nights and features my older sister Tiana, who has taught me a lot about finding my own voice and trusting myself.”

Asha's previous EP The Pinnacle was a coming of age for the artist and songwriter; a culmination of soft glowing idiosyncratic sounds and classic folk arrangements, featuring the single ‘Crybaby’, which was added to rotation across triple j, Double J and triple j Unearthed. Her subsequent single ‘Tank Tops’ was added to full rotation on triple j and became one of 2022’s most celebrated local tracks and a queer anthem, with the song exploring self-discovery, finding new love and having everyone wishing they could be “talking to George”.

Asha has shared stages with renowned artists such as Julia Jacklin, Lime Cordiale, Hope D, Noah Dillon, City and Colour, Paul Dempsey, and many more. The highly respected songwriter has been a finalist in both the Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition and the International Songwriting Competition (ISC). Her live performances have graced the stages of notable festivals, including BIGSOUND, Icebreaker Festival, Against The Grain, Bluesfest, Woodford Folk, and Mullum Music Festivals.

Cruise Control’ is a musical journey that showcases Asha Jefferies' growth as an artist and reaffirms her standing as an artist to watch. CONNECT WITH ASHA JEFFERIES
