Q&A With Tube Screamers: New Single, Live Music & More

Tube Screamers are a Gold Coast based three piece formed in 2020, with a vision of "go hard, or go home". Their sound ranges from rock n' roll, to psychedelic, tied in with an old school bluesly undertone, all blended together into their songs with an electrifying live show that will blow your mind.

The band have gone from strength to strength, gigging relentlessly and sharing the stage with bands such as The Delta Riggs, Press Club, and Peach Fur, and releasing the singles 'Getaway' and 'My Life' in 2023. Their new single 'Figure Me Out' was released on Friday July 26th.

'Figure Me Out' is Tube Screamers third official release, attached to their upcoming EP Dirty Disco set to release early 2025.

"The new single is somewhat of an amalgamation of our previous releases and influences. The repetitious rhythm of the guitar and drums are the backbone of this track, with an infectious bass line driving it home. We really wanted a sing-along that you can crank on the highway, as well as a tune that sounds full and larger than life. Aengus, our lead singer, came up with the lyrics on the fly one afternoon while we were jamming. He felt as though the instrumental side of the track made him feel like he was driving somewhere with no real direction, so the lyrics about getting in the car and going anywhere were born."

Congratulations on your new release ‘Figure Me Out'! Your upcoming EP is set to release in early 2025 - what can we expect from it?

Cooper: "We’ve been working tirelessly on the other tracks on this EP and we can’t wait to share it. We think there’s a little bit of everything sprinkled into the track list from blues, head banging rock, and more modern indie flavours scattered throughout."

Can you tell us more about the creative process behind this track?

Cooper: "We recorded the tracks at Airlock Studios in Brisbane. Beautiful studio surrounded by bushland in Camp Mountain. Our engineer is James See at we’ve worked with him before on our first single 'Black Shoelaces'"

You're a high energy live band who have played on some awesome lineups. Have you got any favourite live show memories so far?

Cooper: "Favourite live show memory is from our first single launch. Almost sold out a night club in Surfers Paradise called elsewhere. They turned the smoke machine on towards the end of the gig, I remember being shoulder to shoulder with people and not being able to see any of them in front of me."

Yasha: "My favourite live shows have always been filled with beer, mates and good tunes. One of my favourite memories of playing a gig is from playing Solbar. Whenever we go up to the sunny coast we are pretty much stranded. Nowhere to sleep, and nobody that we know. Most of the time we end up sleeping in our cars on the side of the road and one time we had the privilege to sleep in a vacant lot in our swags next to a few townhouses. The night always ends late, piss drunk with a bunch of mates walking the streets and wondering where we can sleep for the night."

The local rock scene in Brisbane is pumping with amazing live bands! Who are some of your favourite local bands at the moment?

Cooper: "One of our favourites is a band Boys At The Back, they’ve got a Rage Against the Machine vibe and a super energetic live set. It’s hard to pull a genre like that off and make it a convincing performance."

Yasha: "My favourite local band has to be Reckless Coast. Together they have a crazy distinct and technical bluesy sound with an insane live show. They also know how to slow it down for songs like Burn Street."

Tube Screamers shared that they have the vision of "go hard, or go home." How did this mentality shape your early days as a band and influence your music style and stage presence?

Cooper: "Our go hard or go home mentality probably comes from our competitiveness when it comes to our work ethic as a unit. We work hard, practice as often as we can. Gig as much as possible, and try to give everyone the best show we can possibly give them from start to finish. We were always energetic kids, so giving us microphones and amplifiers only further allowed us to express our love for writing and playing music."

Can you tell us about the initial inspiration behind starting the band and how you all came together?

Cooper: "We’ve all played instruments from a young age (around 9 years old). We didn’t all meet until we were in our late teens after going through the awkward stages of playing double bass (Yasha) and trumpet (Aengus) in primary school bands. By that point we knew our preferences and inspirations when it came to music. When we met in high school, it was a no brainer that we should at least try to start a band and play shitty Led Zeppelin and Pearl Jam covers (turns out we loved it)."

To celebrate your release, you're playing a show at Tomcat in Brisbane on Saturday August 3rd, alongside two special guests Later Daze and Concrete Gold. How did this lineup come together?

Cooper: "We know some of the members of Later Daze from high school, but we never got the chance to actually play a gig together. So for this single launch we thought we’d finally share the stage with them. Concrete Gold were recommended to us from our booking manager who’s worked with them in the past."

From photographers to visual artists, labels, videographers or booking agents, do you have any Brisbane creatives that you’d like to give a shout-out to?

Cooper: "Crushing Promotions has given us so many opportunities over the last 2+ years and we’re eternally grateful for the support and friendship we’ve gotten over the time we’ve worked with them. We’d also like to shout out Tomcat since it’s a place that stands above most other Brisbane venues when it comes to giving up-and-coming bands a platform to show everyone who they are."

Yasha: "Big shoutout to Jesse from Crushing Promotions. Without him we wouldn't be where we are!"
