Fuelled by elements of maximalist electronic pop and hinting towards a grunge-punk background, 'getting better' blends commanding synth leads, abrasive guitars, and stratums of processed vocals for a gripping debut track. Aesthetics collide between sparkly verses and vehement hooks, as the song rapidly ventures through its own surrealist canvas, decorated with glitchy influence and angst-ridden undertones.
The song is accompanied by a salient music video – filmed by Gabrielle Michael and Sarah Bonnet, and edited by Max Pasalic. Shot entirely on an iPhone 13 in various locations throughout Eora/Sydney's Inner West, the video encapsulates the track's dynamism with fast cuts and VHS aesthetics.
KHAOS EMRLD talks about the story behind 'getting better'
"'getting better' was written in July 2022, after I had spent several months in an endless feedback loop of feeling bad about myself and feeling like I was pulling everyone down with me. There were many events that changed the pathway of my life, yet I hadn't done anything to benefit from them. Suddenly, I realised half a year had gone by and I felt like I was exactly where I'd started. The song is a mix of rage and derision, written in a genre I was just getting familiar with around the time, and funnily enough, became the start of an upward trajectory which led me to where I am now."
KHAOS EMRLD is the moniker of Eora/Sydney-based artist Cody Stebbings.
